The president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli has according to a press release stressed the need for universal access to the Internet to be recognised as a new human right. Mr. Sassoli's assertion was contained in a letter where he responded to Mr. Romano Prodi on the importance of Internet access for all. Mr. Sassoli backed his call for Internet access to be recognised as a new human right by stating in his letter that 'more than ever in these months of lockdown, many millions of people in Europe and around the world have been forced to rely on an internet connection to work, study, buy food and communicate with their loved ones. At the same time, lack of access to the internet, for geographical, economic or social reasons, has proved to be a major cause of marginalisation.'
