What's the Difference Between Apple Pencils?

As long as you choose the Apple Pencil compatible with your iPad, you'll probably be satisfied. Here are the differences between the four generations of Apple Pencil:

  • Apple Pencil Pro: The latest Apple Pencil includes advanced features not found in these other models, like squeeze, barrel roll, and haptic feedback. It's even compatible with Find My.
  • Apple Pencil USB-C: This is the most affordable option. It's missing pressure sensitivity for drawing but offers basic writing and note-taking. It charges with a USB-C cable and requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later.
  • Apple Pencil 2: This one has a magnetic attachment to the iPad for pairing and wireless charging. It offers pressure sensitivity and tilt for a more natural drawing experience. Its flat edge and matte finish allow for better grip.
  • Apple Pencil 1: As the first Apple Pencil, it's missing some of the features available in the newer models, such as Apple Pencil hover and double-tap to switch tools. It needs to be plugged into the iPad lightning port for pairing and charging.

Do Apple Pencils Work on All iPads?

Each Apple Pencil is compatible with a different set of iPads. This is why it's important to know which Pencil works with your specific iPad. While most iPads are compatible with at least one Apple Pencil, some older devices are not.

Which iPads Are Not Compatible With the Apple Pencil?

Not only do some iPads not support the latest Apple Pencil, but some earlier iPads don't even work with the 1st-gen Pencil. The following iPads aren't compatible with any Apple Pencil:

  • iPad (5th generation and earlier)
  • iPad mini (4th generation and earlier)
  • iPad Air (2nd generation and earlier)
