On 11 December, the European Commission launched the much expected "The European Green Deal" where amongst other things it tackled the role of digital technologies in achieving a sustainable future. The document acknowledges that 'digital technologies are a critical enabler for attaining the sustainability goals of the Green Deal in many different sectors'. The Commission is therefore expected to tackle how artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, data, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud and edge computing, to name a few, can impact policies on climate change and environment protection.
The Commission is expected to adopt an EU industrial strategy that will explore how the EU can take advantage of digital transformation in order to pursue the objectives of the Green Deal.
