The New York State Senate has passed a law prohibiting use of biometric in schools until July 2022. The law which was signed by the State Governor directs the commissioner of education to study the effects of biometric technologies including facial recognition in schools in the state. Public and private schools in New York have been using biometrics for identification of staff and students in a bid to assure safety. The commissioner of education is expected to seek input from stakeholders such as teachers, school administrators, parents and experts in school safety, security, and data and student privacy issues. This will help them make recommendations on appropriateness of biometrics in schools.
