Digital Solutions for the Urban Poor is a new GSMA report that investigates how digital solutions can improve urban service delivery and provide solutions to underlying challenges related to the unprecedented pace of urbanisation. The latter makes authorities struggle in providing the urban poor with access to basic services such as energy, water, sanitation, waste management, and transport which could be mitigated by digital solutions and mobile connectivity.. 'Digital technology will play a critical role in fueling innovation responsive to the needs of the urban poor. Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) models for instance, which allow low-income customers to make small incremental payments towards otherwise unaffordable goods, and which have demonstrated great results when applied to rural electrification, are now also unlocking a range of urban services such as water, clean cooking gas, and sanitation," highlighted GSMA Head of Mobile for Development Max Cuvellier.
