Which Products Will Use Apple Artificial Intelligence?

Sep, 27, 2024 Hi-network.com

Apple Intelligence is Apple's generative AI platform that delivers all kinds of useful and cool Artificial Intelligence features. Sounds great, right? It is, but not every Apple device can use Apple Intelligence. This article answers some key questions about Apple's AI platform, including what devices support it, what OS and processors are required, and how it relates to ChatGPT.

Which Products Will Use Apple Artificial Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence will be available on models across the range of Apple's most important devices, including iPhones and MacBooks. Here are all of the Apple products that support Apple Intelligence:

  • iMac: 2021 and later.
  • iPhone: 15 Pro/Pro Max and later.
  • iPad Air: 5 and later.
  • iPad Pro (11-inch): 4th-generation and later.
  • iPad Pro (12.9-inch): 5th-generation and later.
  • Mac Mini: 2020 and later.
  • Mac Pro: 2023 and later.
  • Mac Studio: all models.
  • MacBook Air (13-inch): 2020 and later.
  • MacBook Air (15-inch): 2023 and later.
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch): 2020 (M1) and later.
  • MacBook Pro (14-inch): 2021 and later.
  • MacBook Pro (16-inch): 2021 and later.

While Apple hasn't announced it yet, we expect to see some Apple Intelligence features arrive with the next-gen Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro 2, and-if they become real products at all-rumored devices like the Apple home robot.

There has been some confusion about whether Apple Intelligence is only available on the iPhone 15 series. It's available on the iPhone 15 (and later iPhone models), recent models of the iPad Pro and iPad Air, and several Mac desktop and laptop computers, and will continue to be available on future hardware.

Which Operating Systems is Apple Intelligence Compatible With?

While Apple Intelligence runs on all of Apple's major operating systems-iOS, iPadOS, macOS-it doesn't work with every version of these operating systems. The OS versions that are required to use Apple Intelligence are:

  • iOS 18 and up.
  • iPadOS 18 and up.
  • macOS Sequoia (15.0) and up.

What Processors Are Required to Use Apple Intelligence?

AI requires a lot of processor power to perform all of its impressive tasks, and that's definitely true of Apple Intelligence. That's why just running one of the Apple Intelligence-compatible OS versions isn't enough to use Apple's AI platform. You also need to have a sufficiently powerful chip at the heart of your device.

The processors required to use Apple Intelligence are:

  • iPhone: A17 Pro and newer.
  • iPad: M1 and newer.
  • Mac: M1 and newer on most models; M2 and newer on Mac Pro.

When Will Apple Intelligence Be Released?

While the official release of Apple Intelligence will be in Fall 2024, Apple has already released the Apple Intelligence beta to developers.

This isn't the same as the company's public betas, which are available to anyone who wants them. This beta requires you to have an Apple Developer account and to be comfortable with more complicated technical processes and risks than public betas. It's not for the average person.

Are Apple Intelligence and Apple GPT the Same Thing?

Yes. Prior to the announcement of Apple Intelligence, there was speculation about Apple's forthcoming AI platform. Some rumors suggested that it would be called Apple GPT, a name referencing the breakthrough generative AI tool, ChatGPT. Of course, Apple turned out to have a different name for its AI platform, and we likely won't ever see a product called Apple GPT.

Is Apple Intelligence Based on ChatGPT?

Early speculation said that Apple Intelligence is based on ChatGPT, partly because ChatGPT was mentioned during the unveiling of Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence is a fully homegrown Apple generative AI platform that isn't based on ChatGPT in any way.

The confusion partly arises from the partnership with OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, that Apple announced at the same event where it debuted Apple Intelligence.

That collaboration integrates ChatGPT as one AI feature available to users. For instance, if Siri can't answer a question, it can pass the question to ChatGPT, but ChatGPT isn't replacing Siri. As another example, ChatGPT will integrate with Apple's writing tools, helping users generate new text. In both cases, ChatGPT is a complement to what the OS and Apple Intelligence are already doing, not building Apple Intelligence on top of ChatGPT.

The foundational technology powering Apple Intelligence is a Large Language Model (LLM), the same kind of tech used by ChatGPT, but there are many different LLMs made by many companies (including Google, Meta, and others). When it comes to Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT isn't involved.
