The European Commission has extended the deadline for proposals for European Digital Identity Wallet under the European Digital Identity framework to 17 August 2022. This gives industry and policy makers more time to iron out issues arising under the framework, whose objective is to improve service delivery through a secure electronic identity, digital signatures and secure sharing of personal identity data.
To achieve this objective, the Commission is proposing a decentralised EU-eID ecosystem supported by a self-sovereign identity framework that gives the citizen the ability to choose whom to share their data with. The system includes a biometrically-secure digital wallet that would allow citizens to verify their ID, access public and private services, and store digital documents in an app.
