The government of Estonia has approved a Bill to establish a central automated biometric identification system (ABIS). This will consolidate biometric authentication, which is currently carried out by various agencies using separate databases. Objectives of the ABIS include to improve reliability of identification and to combat crime. The design and development of the database will take into account privacy and data protection and its use will be limited to authorised officials.
