The Washington State Senate has adopted its version of The Washington Privacy Act after a 46 to 1 vote. The bill is now going to be discussed by the state House. For Senator Carlyle, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, this legislation builds on 'central elements of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and gives Washington residents meaningful tools to determine how their personal data is used and shared. That includes the right to know who is using consumers' data and why, the right to correct inaccurate personal data, the right to delete certain personal data, and the right to opt out of the processing of data in key areas'. According to MediaPost, the text passed by the Senate does not contain a controversial provision that would have allowed consumers to bring private lawsuits over violations.
