The United States is deploying a growing number of its cyber forces abroad to aid foreign governments in their fight against hackers, US Army Major General William Hartman said during the RSA 2023 Conference. The US military's Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF) has conducted 47 such defensive operations in 20 countries at the request of those nations over the past three years, Hartman noted. According to Hartman, demand for such operations is only increasing.
The initiative is part of a broader push by the US government to improve cooperation with foreign allies in the fight against cybercrime, which is often cross-border. The CNMF has been working closely with the US's premier cyber agency, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and both agencies have worked together to disrupt potential attacks against three US federal agencies by foreign adversaries.
