Indian Government to delay laptop and PC import rules due to industry input

Sep, 06, 2023 Hi-network.com

The Indian government is considering a one-year delay in implementing new import licensing rules for laptops, tablets, and all-in-one PCs. This decision comes in response to applications from 40 companies, including major players like HP, Dell, and Lenovo, seeking to establish manufacturing plants in the country under the PLI scheme 2.0 for IT hardware. Initially, the government had announced immediate restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, and PCs, requiring companies to obtain valid licenses before importing such products. The original deadline for implementing these licensing requirements for laptops and servers was 31 October, but OEMs have requested a postponement. The government had previously indicated that it would streamline the process by issuing licenses for importing laptops and tablets within two days through online channels. However, some fear that the import restrictions could lead to higher prices for these devices in the Indian market. PC vendors have emphasized that manufacturing involves a complex supply chain and cannot be initiated immediately.
