Google has asked Brazil's Supreme Court to drop investigations into the company's alleged campaign against the Fake News Bill. The argument is that Google's actions contributed to democratic debate rather than undermining it.
The inquiry, initiated by Justice Alexandre de Moraes at the request of the Attorney General's Office, aims to investigate Google Brazil's directors and others for potential abuse of economic power. Google displayed a link opposing the bill on its homepage but claims to have exercised freedom of expression without engaging in illegal or abusive behaviour.
The company emphasized that its representatives have never promoted or taken part in spreading disinformation, hate speech, advocating for crimes, or attacking public institutions.
