The draft of a European Commission white paper contains an option of temporary ban of the facial recognition technology that would last between three to five years. The ban would extend to places like train stations, stadiums, and shopping centres. The reason is the high speed adoption of facial recognition software and EU citizens right under the GDPR to 'not to be subject of a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling'. The final version will be published next month as part of the regulation on artificial intelligence (AI).
