Google Pixel Watch users are getting a new feature that could prevent them from making a life-changing mistake.

Last fall, Google introduced a Pixel feature that listens in on your phone calls to protect you from scams. Now that same protection is coming to your wrist.

In a post on the Pixel Watch help community, Google announced that Scam Detection is coming to the Pixel Watch, and it is available now.

The AI-powered feature detects conversation patterns that are commonly used by scammers while a call is ongoing. If it detects a potential scam, you will hear a sound, feel a vibration, and receive a notification.

Available now for Pixel Watch 2 and 3

For now, Google says Scam Detection is available on the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 when connected to a Pixel 9 and newer phone via Bluetooth (which is a little strange, given that phone-based Scam Detection is available on older Pixel phones too). It only works in the US for calls in English.

Since Gemini Nano conducts the detection, the feature does not work for Pixel watches with an LTE connection.

How to use Scam Detection

To use Scam Detection, you will need to make sure it is enabled (it is off by default). Head to your Phone app, then Settings, then Scam Detection to toggle it. When you have it on, it automatically runs in the background during calls. You will hear an audible beep at the start of every call and every few minutes during the call to let you know it is active.

Google warns that Scam Detection is not 100% accurate, and scammers constantly change tactics, so you should always use caution when answering calls from unknown numbers. Still, even if it is not perfect, this is a potentially huge feature and makes taking calls on your watch just as safe as on your phone.
