In collaboration with the University of Hawai'i, Maui's Department of Business and Economic Development and Tourism is preparing for public consultations on the Digital Equity Plan and the Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment programs (BEAD). The former is a five-year plan to promote and install digital equity through access to affordable devices, training, and internet access, regardless of socio-demographic or financial status. Special consideration is also extended to the differently-abled community and veterans. On the other hand, the BEAD program focuses on bridging the digital divide as it relates to the quality of internet connectivity in all areas across the islands, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The public is encouraged to register via this link.
Why does it matter?
Public consultations will position officials to better serve the needs of these communities, particularly as it relates to triaging the many issues contributing to the digital divide in Hawai'i.
