UNESCO member states have adopted a Recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), aimed to provide a basis to make AI systems work for the good of humanity, individuals, societies, and the environment and ecosystems, and to prevent harm. The recommendation outlines a series of values, principles, and actions to guide member states in the formulation of their legislation, policies, and other instruments regarding AI. For instance, the document calls for action to guarantee individuals more privacy and data protection, by ensuring transparency, agency, and control over their personal data. Explicits bans on the use of AI systems for social scoring and mass surveillance are also highlighted, and there are provisions for ensuring that real-world biases are not replicated online.
