Turn On Enhanced Safe Browsing on Your Desktop

Enhanced Safe Browsing in Google Chrome is off by default, but you can turn on the feature easily on your desktop and mobile device.You can turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing on your WindowsorMac computer the same way.

Even if you sync your Google account, you need to activate the feature separately foreach device.

  1. In Chrome, select thethree dotson the top right and pickSettings.

  2. ChoosePrivacy and Securityon the left and thenSecurityon the right.

  3. Below Safe Browsing, mark the option forEnhanced protection.

  4. Optionally, select the arrowto the right ofEnhanced protectionforadditional information about the feature.

  5. To turn off Enhanced Safe Browsing on your computer later, follow Steps 1 through 3 above and chooseStandard protection or No protectionper your preference.Keep in mind that it can take up to 24 hours for the change process to complete.

Turn On Enhanced Safe Browsing on Mobile

If you use Google Chrome on your mobile device, you can use Enhanced Safe Browsing on both Android and iPhone.The steps to turn the feature on and off are the same on both devices.

  1. Select thethree dotsat the top on Android or bottom on iPhone.

  2. ChooseSettings.

  3. ChoosePrivacy and Security.

  4. TapSafe Browsing.

  5. SelectEnhanced Protection. Optionally, tap thearrow or Infoicon to the right to learn more about the feature.

  6. TapDoneon the top right to exit the Settings.

  7. To turn off Enhanced Safe Browsing on your mobile device later, follow these steps again, but choose eitherStandard Protectionor No Protection. Again, please allow up to 24 for the change to take effect.

What Is Google Chrome's Enhanced Safe Browsing?

Google introduced Enhanced Safe Browsing for Chrome and Gmail to help protect users from phishing and malware.

Once you turn it on, the feature works in the background to protect you from malicious websites, dangerous downloads, and harmful browser extensions.

Google uses data from Enhanced Safe Browsing to increase security when you're signed in to Chrome and Gmail, associates that information with your Google account for protection across Google's apps, and conducts real-time scanning to either alert you or block unsafe sites, downloads, and extensions.
