Gmail is making it easier to pay your bills - here's how

Last fall, Gmail unveiled new summary cards that make it easier to find important information in an email, such as a tracking number for a purchase, a flight number for a trip, details for an upcoming event, and more.

Pay bills form quick-access buttons

In an announcement this week, Google revealed that email summaries now let you view and pay certain bills directly from quick-access buttons. Instead of looking through an entire message to find a link to pay, you'll now see quick buttons at the top of some emailed bills. You'll see options to "Pay bill," "Review bill," or "Remind Me" if you don't want to pay it now but would like a reminder to pay it later. If you choose the reminder option, Gmail adds the bill to your tasks.

The bill card also shows information about the bill, such as the amount, the date it's due, and your account number (that information will need to be in the actual message itself for Gmail to have access). For package card summaries, you'll see order details and the option to track package arrival dates. Event summary cards will give you details about the event and let you add events to your calendar or invite friends. The travel card lets you manage reservations, check in for a flight, and access travel details, such as a hotel's check-out time, all in one place.

Happening soon section

When Google first unveiled the redesigned cards, it also announced a "Happening soon" section that would appear directly over your main inbox. Click on that section, Google says, and you'll see all your upcoming card events. That feature doesn't seem to be available yet, but since Google is releasing the new bill pay card, it may not be far behind.

For now, this capability is only available on Android and iOS devices for Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.

Google says the new feature is rolling out gradually, so if you don't see it yet, you should soon.
