During Sundar Pichai's visit to Brussels, the CEO of Google and Alphabet met with high-ranking officials from the European Union (EU). The concepts of self-regulation of AI by businesses and the issue of Russian propaganda were among the main topics discussed

Thierry Breton, the EU industry chief, revealed that Alphabet and the European Commission are working towards establishing a voluntary agreement on AI that involves both European and non-European companies. Breton stated that 'Sundar and I agreed that we cannot afford to wait until AI regulation actually becomes applicable, and to work together with all AI developers to already develop an AI pact on a voluntary basis ahead of the legal deadline.' The commissioner also urged EU countries and lawmakers to finalise details of the proposed AI Act before the end of the year.

In a separate meeting with Vera Jourova, Vice President of the European Commission, concerns were raised regarding the proliferation of pro-Kremlin war propaganda and disinformation through Google's products and services. The risks associated with disinformation in EU and national elections were also discussed. Pichai has committed to addressing the challenges encountered by independent Russian media in monetizing their content, specifically on YouTube within Russia, Jourova added.
