A day after announcing upgraded conversation capabilities for Gemini, Google is rolling out more updates to its AI. All users are gaining access to a useful feature that was formerly available only to paid subscribers, and paid users are receiving a feature that helps continue previous conversations.
First up is a paid feature that's now making its way to all users. Last fall, Google introduced the ability to analyze files to Gemini, a feature that was exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers who paid$20 a month. That capability is now rolling out to free users on both the Gemini app and the web-based version of Gemini.

You'll know you have the new feature when you see "Upload files to get quick summaries and actionable insights." You can upload a file from your Google Drive or directly from your device -- up to 10 files at a time or one code folder with a maximum of 1,000 files.
After uploading your files, you can ask questions about the content, get a summary of the content, or create a chart from a spreadsheet.
Gemini analysis supports a number of file types, including TXT plain text, code files including C, CPP, PY, JAVA, PHP, SQL, and HTML, document files like DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, DOT, DOTX, HWP, HWPX, documents created in Google Docs, tabular data files CSV, TSV, spreadsheet files XLS, XLSX, and spreadsheets created in Google Sheets.
File analysis only works with Gemini 2.0 Flash.
Starting today, Google says, Gemini Advanced can recall your past chats to provide more helpful responses. You'll be able to ask a question about a previous conversation, get a summary of a previous conversation, or just pick right back up where you left off. Gemini will use information from previous talks to generate its response.

Gemini could already remember your interests and preferences, but this feature goes further and recalls things you've talked about.
If the idea of AI remembering things you've said creeps you out a little, you can easily review, delete, or decide how long to keep your chat history (or turn off Gemini Apps Activity completely) in the My Activity setting.
For comparison, ChatGPT has had a similar feature for a year now. This feature is starting with the English version of Gemini, but support for other languages is coming over the next few weeks.
