US government launches antitrust investigation on VeriSign over .web

According toDomain Name Wire, the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice has opened an investigation on VeriSign concerning the .web generic top level domain (gTLD). The company received a Civil Investigative Demand in mid January and it was requested to provide information about its potential operations for .web. Verisign, also registry operator for .com, has paid$135 million to acquire .web, after concluding a deal with one of the companies which applied for the domain.
