The Department of Justice (DoJ) made the largest financial seizure in its history, seizing US$3.6 billion in bitcoin stolen in the 2016 hack of the Hong Kong cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex. The hack is valued at US$4.5 billion. The DoJ also arrested a married couple on charges of conspiring to launder money and to defraud the US government.
'Federal law enforcement demonstrates once again that we can follow money through the blockchain,' stated assistant attorney general Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the DoJ.
