Ride-hailing company Uber has received approval from authorities in California, USA, to test self-driving cars on public roads. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles of the State of California, there are over 60 companies that have a permit to test autonomous vehicles with a driver on public roads (as of early February 2020). Back in 2018, Uber decided not to renew its permit to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in California, in the context of an Arizona fatal accident involving one of its cars. The company intends to resuming testing autonomous cars in San Francisco (the company's headquarters city), but it has not yet announced when this would happen.
