Amid growing scrutiny over the storage of personal data, and in the wake of CJEU's invalidation of the Safe Harbour, Microsoft has announced that it is opening two cloud data centres in the UK next year. This will allow businesses and government bodies using Microsoft's online computing services to rest safe in the knowledge that their data about customers and citizens is kept within the UK. The head of Microsoft's cloud and enterprise division, Scott Guthrie, said that the centres are being built as "data residency" is becoming an increasingly significant issue.
