Google has introduced new authentication and security features to Gmail to help identify emails that are not secure or can be harmful. Users will be notified when they receive emails from or are sending emails to someone whose email service does not support encryption, through a broken lock icon shown in the message. Additionally, when Gmail users receive emails that cannot be authenticated, a question mark will be displayed in the place of the senders' profile photo, logo or avatar. Googlenotes that, while not all affected emails are necessarily dangerous, the new features encourage users to be 'extra careful about replying to, or clicking on links in messages [they] are not sure about'.
