A suit filed in the U.S. District court for the Northern District of California on Wednesday by the Department of Justice against the ride-hailing giant Uber, over claims that the company discriminates against passengers with disabilities, in violation of the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act.
In April 2016, Uber launched its wait time policy, charging fees from two minutes after the Uber vehicle arrives at the pick up location. This practice constituted discrimination for passengers with disabilities as those passengers may need more time to board the vehicle sue to that disability.
Uber does not give discretion to drivers to waive or otherwise alter wait time fees, which are calculated automatically in the app.
