Tech industry calls for AI-friendly rules in Australia

28 de agosto de 2023 Hi-network.com

A group of big tech companies, including Apple, Meta, and Google, is advising the Australian government to proceed cautiously on AI rules and regulations. DIGI, the body representing the tech industry, argues that existing rules are enough to handle AI regulation and that rushing into new laws could hamper AI innovation and development.

Google has specifically called for relaxing Australia's copyright laws to allow AI to mine websites for information. However, Australia has recognised the need for tougher laws on AI to prevent misuse of the technology. In the healthcare system, the Australian Medical Association has also called for stronger national regulations to control the use of AI, emphasising the need to protect patients' rights and ensure improved health outcomes.

Why does it matter?

As the global race to regulate AI accelerates, the Australian government recognises the need to strengthen its legal framework to address potential risks, such as deepfakes or discrimination against certain groups. While AI systems scrape massive amounts of online data and content, new regulations can also help protect intellectual property rights.
