According to analytics firm SimilarWeb, ChatGPT has seen its traffic drop for the third consecutive month.
Launched by OpenAI in November 2022, the popular AI chatbot reached 100 million monthly active users two months later. The number of worldwide desktop and mobile website visits to ChatGPT decreased by 3.2% to 1.43 billion, following approximately 10% drops in each of the previous two months. Furthermore, the amount of time visitors spent on the website has been declining monthly since March, reducing from an average of 8.7 minutes to 7 minutes in August. The data from August indicates a stabilization in global unique visits and even saw a rise in users in the US.

In May, OpenAI launched ChatGPT's app on the iOS ecosystem, which could, in part, explain the website's decrease in usage. The traffic decline could also be due to the school holidays. Since most school sessions around the world resume in September, the share of younger website users, which decreased over the summer, is now starting to rise. It could further boost ChatGPT's use, as some educational institutions have started adopting GenAI tools.
