Members appointed to the US National Security Commission for Artificial Intelligence

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and former US Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work wereappointed to co-chair the US National Security Commission for Artificial Intelligence. The Commission was established by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019, as an independent body within the executive branch, tasked with reviewing advances in artificial intelligence (AI), related machine learning development, and associated technologies and their potential impact on US national security and defense. The areas for the Commission to look at while conducting the review include the competitiveness and technological advantage of the US in AI, workforce and education incentives 'to attract and recruit leading talent in AI', risks associated with advances in military employment of AI, and associated ethical considerations related to AI and machine learning. The Commission is expected to finalise its work by October 2020. Some of the other members of the Commission include Oracle co-CEO Safra Catz, Director of Microsoft Research Eric Horvitz, CEO of Amazon Web Services Andy Jassy, Head of Google Cloud AI Andrew Moore, and Dakota State University President Jose-Marie Griffiths.
