Five years after the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force, the Malta Institute of Privacy Law (MIPL) was officially launched on 25 May by a group of 20 data protection lawyers.

The Institute aims to act as a central point of reference in discussions with public authorities when drafting legislation, sectoral policies and guidelines relating to data protection. It will also be responsible for the conduct and publication of studies and position papers, and for stakeholder education on data protection law through campaigns, conferences and publications. The first administrators of the Institute will be Paul Micallef Grimaud, Claude Micallef Grimaud, Sharon Xuereb, Jackie Mallia and Philip Formosa.

GDPR and Data Protection Law, Cap 586 of Maltese Law, govern the processing of personal data, whether held electronically or manually. The Malta Communications Authority are in full compliance with the data protection principles of these data protection laws.
