The Ministry of Communication and Information in Indonesia has implemented a new policy that requires all citizens to have a digital ID. This policy aims to enhance public data security in the digital space.

Director General of Informatics Applications, explained that program will be developed in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Law. Its purpose is to validate the data owner and prevent the misuse of personal identities. Implementation of the policy is expected to improve public data security and reduce the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive information.

To ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the digital ID, the information stored within it will be cross-referenced with the data registered in government records through civil registration. This additional level of verification will enhance the security of digital documents. It is important to note that only authorized Electronic Certification Providers (PSrE) are permitted to issue digital IDs. The government has carefully selected these providers and has established the technology that will be used in issuing.

Why does it matter?
The digital ID will validate the data owner and deter the misuse of personal identities. Authorized Electronic Certification Providers will issue the digital IDs, and the accuracy and authenticity of the IDs will be verified against government records, as Indonesia is battling with the frequent data breaches.
