According to the CBC, the Canadian innovation minister has introduced new data protection legislation, officially called the 'Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts.' This new federal privacy law would significantly increase fines for companies in case of privacy violations, (up to 5% of global revenue or CAD$25 million for the most serious offenses). The federal privacy commissioner would also be granted the ability to force an organisation to comply and to order a company to stop collecting data or using personal information.
