The Google team has designed 13 new emoji to depict women in more occupations. The emoji, inspired by a New York Times opinion piece Emoji Feminism, have been submitted to the Unicode Consortium for formal approval. Apple's wide range of skin colors in emoji were slow to be approved last year, as questions were asked about possible racial overtones (is that yellow emoji meant to be Asian? jaundiced? traditional yellow happy face?), but these are expected to pass through the formal procedures quite quickly. Emoji are often linked to a specific platform, and can be misinterpreted as they change form across platforms.
