The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) filed a complaint against Dell Technologies Inc. and Dell Inc. for patent infringement, alleging that Dell infringed three patents through use in coding systems and methods in Dell products. The three patents in question cover 'irregular repeat and accumulate codes' that reduce errors when data is being transmitted over a wireless network and are key to the 802.11 wi-fi standard. These patents were already subject to Caltech lawsuit against Apple and Broadcom, which led to a USD$1.1 billion verdict in favour of Caltech in January 2020.
